The University of Kentucky is doing some great studies to show how bed bugs are building resistance to pyrethroid insecticides. As we work to design effective methods to treat bedbugs, we continue to keep in mind the science and changing nature of the bed bug populations.
The overall goal of this study is to understand the molecular basis of bed bugs adaption to insecticides which will be used to devise the most effective and sustainable resistance management strategies. To accomplish this goal, we took advantage of the recent advances in bed bug genomics and post-genomic technologies to carry out a genome wide analysis of the pyrethroid resistance associated genes. Previous studies reported that reduced cuticle permeability is one of the modes of insect resistance to insecticides32, 33.
