Dallas County Health and Human Services announced the third human West Nile virus case Thursday for the 2013 season.
The resident lives in the University Park ZIP code of 75225 and was diagnosed with West Nile Fever. For medical confidentiality and personal privacy reasons, the county does not provide additional identifying information.
According to the city of University Park, the victim was an adolescent boy who lives in the north-central portion of the city and suffered flu-like symptoms. He was not hospitalized.
The city sprayed insecticides in streets and alleys near the victim’s home last night in response to the reported case.
In 2012 North Texas suffered its worst West Nile outbreak since the virus arrived here in 2002. One University Park resident died from the virus and six others tested positive, according to the city’s website.
On Tuesday, a West Nile infection was confirmed for a Richardson man, and on Wednesday for a Grand Prairie woman.
“Dallas County wants to alert the public that the mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus are here and they’re active,” said Zachary Thompson, health department director.
“Our mosquito surveillance program and the county and municipal abatement teams are taking the appropriate actions to ensure the safety of our residents. However, it is important that residents do their part by taking the necessary precautions to avoid exposure to the virus.”
